What is Lymphoedma?
An abnormal accumulation of high protein fluid caused by a malfunctioning lymphatic system.
- Changes in skin and tissue texture
- Vulnerability to infection
- Chronic low-level inflammation
Secondary Lymphoedema can occur from:
- Cancer treatments (Radiation etc.)
- The removal of lymph nodes
- Trauma to the body and skin (burns, repeated bouts of local infection, insect bites and more)
Without treatment, Lymphoedema is predicted to worsen continually, and patients risk developing serious infection, irreversible swelling and discolouration of the skin. Treatment for Lymphoedema include; skin care, massage, compression wear and exercise.
