What is the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system is a part of both the circulatory system and the immune system; The heart pumps blood through vessels called the arteries and into the capillaries; vessels thin enough to allow oxygen, nutrients, proteins, carbon dioxide and waste products to pass through to the organs. The veins then return the blood and reabsorb some of the fluid that has exited the capillaries back to the heart. However, the venous end of the circulatory system is not strong to return most of the remaining fluid. Here the lymphatic system removes excess fluid from the body tissues to return to the blood stream, as well as filtering waste products and carries antigens to lymph nodes to alert the immune system to activate if needed.
When things go wrong!
When the lymphatic system is overloaded due to injury, infection or blockage, swelling can occur; this will impair the body’s immune system. Lymphatic Therapy & MLD massage helps reduce this swelling and regulate the lymphatic flow. Both the veins and lymphatic vessels do not have a ‘pump’ (such as the heart on the arterial end) they rely heavily on muscle contractions, massage and movement to push the fluid in the correct direction, gravity can affect this flow and the systems can slowdown if a person has been standing for long periods. If these vessels overload and begin to hold too much fluid they can be permanently damaged. Due the similarities in the functioning of fluid return the lymphatic system shares with the veins, Lymphatic therapy promotes the return of blood and nutrients to the heart and helps to reduce/prevent varicose veins.
What is Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy?
DLT is a treatment programme catered for reducing swelling and improving circulation. A DLT trained therapist has undergone further education in the functioning of the lymphatic and circulatory system, this education allows them to create and treatment specific to the individual and prescribe the necessary compression garments and stockings
What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of high protein fluid in the interstitial caused by malfunctioning of the lymphatic system.
Swelling, changes in skin and tissue texture, vulnerability to infection and chronic low level inflammation.
Lymphedema can be Primary (hereditary or birth anomaly) or Secondary (acquired from damage to the lymphatic system).
Secondary Lymphedema can occur from cancer treatments such as radiation and the removal of lymph nodes, trauma to the body and skin such as burns, motor vehicle accidents, obesity, lipoedema, repeated bouts of local infection, insect bites, bacteria, fungi and much more. It is important that ‘AT RISK’ of lymphedema patients are treated too! Lymphedema can strike at anytime post cancer treatment.
